Here Ive learned two different ways of educating philosophy. The Western Europe one through introduction development conclusion and the US ones through context, facts, facts, facts (or what it is assimilated to be facts) and explanation. Its not new that English language is more direct than its European counterparts: French, Spanish, German, Russian, and Italian. I believe ours are more emotional, still rational, but my personal feeling on it, take a book from Carlos Luis Zafon in Spanish, one from Paul Auster in English,
Why them? 2 of my favorites authors. Still, I believe you will see the difference of the mood the readers is put in. I do agree part is due to the style of writing; still some is due to the language used. I keep repeating it, in English, with plenty of words only of one syllabus, hard to compete with multi-syllabus languages. It is kind of impacting the whole experience I believe, it is kind of helping making English the norm, as easier and more direct.
Fact? TV shows through the frame of the TV. Should you had a shitt* day, with rainy weather, and with problems on public transportation making you late. Even if this latter wasnt due to strikes, when looking to the information, which is nicely simplifying the frame for you, chances are that you will link one to the other, while it appears objectively there might have been no interrelation. Call me a philosopher; I prefer to consider myself as a pragmatist looking through the prism of everydays life. It helps understand, it helps being objective. So now, the big unknowns, searching a job, what is the frame of the human resources person looking to her/his emails? Values: work values giving the belief we need to be efficient. Hence good chance, you will be the 100th applicants to the jobs, and the screening will be quick. List your arguments; it can depend of so many things we cannot control.
Example: HR in Paris or any other big cities, 20% of chance your application will be first reviewed by a filter person or an intern, who came to work by metro and started its day at 8. Either you are read at 8.30 or at 10.30 after a coffee break and chitchat with others, or at the end of the day. Would you dare to be original given the high risk that the person might not be receptive to fancy description during 75% of the day? Would you write a novel? Speak about your childhood? Or get it over bullet points?
As a writer, I still aim to offer a break possibly to the reader of my covering letter, if going that far. Yes I am searching a job, and yes as a writer, I still want the nicely disposed and written paragraph, a flow that leads you to the conclusion: not a torrent, not an ocean, not a small river, they are not salmons; they need a break, if I dare use the image. Given that most of the times, we will not be aware of what is happening in the environment and the context of the others, reading news, and keeping update of the frame, demographic and geographic, is of first help. I still do believe one would advertise and communicate better through the numerous channels of communication we know have by being true to him/her. You have your values, your beliefs. Communication is about interaction, and misunderstandings are so easy to be created, that it’s easier to kiss it (Kiss: keep it simple and stupid).
